Todd, Whitney, Bailey & Peter: A Herndon, VA Family Session

OMG, guys. This family. So much fun, and the kids were a riot. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen siblings get along as well as Bailey and Peter did. Peter would just light up whenever Bailey grinned at him, and they laughed (and made us laugh!) so much.

I was *so* happy to get to do this family session. Whitney and I have been friends since shortly after I moved to this area. She and I were roommates when she began dating Todd, and I think one of the best things is when friendships last long enough to see your friends evolve through the different stages of their lives. Whit and Todd will be married 10 years this year, and it’s clear how in love with each other and their kids they are. I am so very grateful to be involved with this whole family, and am glad I got to capture the fun they have together.

Celebrating My Best Friend

This guy:

Birthday-6

is Skylos. My furry best friend.

He’s TWELVE today!! Look at all the handsome gray on his chin.

Knowing my track record with goldfish and plants, I wouldn’t have put money on me being able to keep a living creature alive and thriving for 12 years, but…here we are. Every day I am grateful that I have him. For someone like me, who struggles with anxiety and depression, having this guy in my life has been a blessing from the universe. He makes me laugh, he gives great snuggles, and he makes sure I get out of bed every day.  I can definitely see that he is aging, and it hurts my heart knowing he won’t be around forever, but I am glad we are taking his journey together.

Now, like any good labrador retriever, Skylos eats everything in sight. But he’s also a weirdo. He absolutely *loves* bananas.  So he had a happy birthday banana this morning, but lest we be thought of as the equivalent of someone who hands out apples to trick-or-treaters, we will probably take him out for some vanilla ice cream this weekend.

Happy birthday, buddy! Here’s to (at least) 12 more, right?! We love you!

Fall 2016: A Summary

Yep. Totally slacking. My last post here was 9 months ago.
Oops.

I, for one, am glad 2016 is winding down. I can’t say I haven’t been doing any photography, but for most of the last 9 months, the thought of getting out and doing it has been, frankly, exhausting. Even just working on fun stuff for myself. 2016 was not a terribly easy year for me.

This was a year where I could feel the almost constant nagging of depression and anxiety. I’ve long struggled with those things, but sometimes it’s just a more frustrating fight than others. I hate it because it affects what I want to do, my relationships, everything. Then in August I cleverly managed to break my foot (hint: be careful stepping off curbs…no…really…they can just jump out from under you at any moment).  As soon as my foot was back to normal(ish), I was so eager to get back to normal I promptly messed up my shoulder at the gym and am still dealing with the consequences of that. So, needless to say, I am planning on 2017 being a better, less injury-prone year.

I wasn’t a total loss on photography, though. I did manage to get out and explore a bit, just in my own neighborhood. Fall is my favorite season, and when I do convince myself to get out and play, I am always rewarded by how much better I feel when I am done. So here’s some of my “just for me” work – I hope you enjoy!

Jhonna, Ryan, Quinn & Riley: Northern Virginia Maternity and Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Jhonna and Ryan first appeared on my blog in 2012 (!) when they were expecting their first baby, Quinn. Now Quinn is turning into an adorable young lady and is officially a big sister to baby brother Riley!! I got together with Jhonna, Ryan, and Quinn in October for a maternity/family session and then got to see them all again when Riley arrived in November. This is a compilation of both those sessions – they were keeping Riley’s name a secret until he was born and the maternity photos would have given away the first letter of his name, so I couldn’t share some of these until after he arrived!

Needless to say, I adore this family and am so lucky to watch their family grow! Thanks again to all of you for inviting me into these special moments.

Justin, Sara, Sydney & Rootbeer: A Burke Lake Park Family Session

I always love seeing this family! They are SO much fun, cheerful, wear wonderfully coordinated outfits, and consider their chocolate lab part of the family – and if you know anything about me, you’ll know that makes them awesome in my book! We met up early on a Saturday at Burke Lake Park and had fun exploring (and avoiding a disc golf tournament!) to get these shots. Thanks again, guys, for sharing your family with me for a morning! I hope you had as much fun as I did.

Cara & Mark: Old Town Alexandria Engagement Session

These two are pretty much the perfect couple. Seriously. It’s SO easy to see how much they love each other. They’re cute and they’re goofy and it was easy to see how much they enjoy just being together! And I love their story – dated in high school, went their separate ways after graduation, got back in touch, did the whole “hey, we should visit and catch up” thing, and then Mark popped the question, complete with family and fireworks (no, really, there were fireworks)! How is that not perfect?

They’re also very accommodating – they were willing to get up at the crack of dawn to meet along the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria for their shoot, which they rocked, in spite of the drizzly start to our day!

Cara and Mark, thank you so much for having me do these photos for you! I had such a fun time with you both and hope you enjoy your Washington (State!) wedding in November! Best wishes to you both!

Kim, Susan & Elena: Reston Winter Glamour Shoot

It’s May. It’s 90 degrees. So what makes sense? A winter glam session, of course! I have to start this post by saying I have the best friends in the world. I had an idea combining evening gowns and a snowy backdrop, and luckily I also have friends who love me enough that they were game to get outside on a chilly January afternoon for this session. We did have a lot of fun and I bought them all margaritas after, to warm them back up. I hope you enjoy, and thanks again, ladies, for being willing to freeze for me! (And, Kim, for being willing to share your fabulous vintage furs for the session!)

I asked them to laugh…and they immediately started saying choice words about me getting them out in the cold. Hey, whatever works!
