2013 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s

I was really honored when I was asked if I’d be interested in participating in this event. I’m always happy to help out with charity events, but this one was personal for me, too. My great-uncle passed away from Alzheimer’s, so I’m aware of how heartbreaking this disease can be. Since 1980, the Alzheimer’s Association has been the leading advocacy organization for this disease, supporting research, developing policy resources, and providing support for Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers.

Over 3,000 people participated in the DC walk and raised almost $700,000 in support of the organization! It was so clear how important this issue is to the participants and how meaningful it was for them to take time on a (very chilly!) Saturday morning to come out for this event. Some people had signs and t-shirts in honor of the friends and family they were walking for. Kids and dogs got into the act, too! I was glad to see so many people having a good time raising awareness and am honored I had the chance to be involved.

There’s no way I could share all the photos I have of the great teams that participated on the blog, but I’ve included a few of my favorites from the day below!

Mark & Linda’s Ben Breman Park, Alexandria Engagement Session

I was excited when I got my first message from Mark. I had donated a gift certificate to the Yellow Ribbon Fund as an auction item, and Mark got the gift certificate from the auction and wanted to use it for engagement pictures with his fiancee, Linda! I knew they’d be great people because they were supporting a great charity, but I really knew they were awesome when they told me they met at a neighborhood martini night. :)

We had fun checking out their neighborhood park, Ben Brenman Park – it’s sort of tucked away in an Alexandria neighborhood and I’d never realized it was there! Really cute place – lots of walking trails, a great lake with fountains, cute gazebo. Definitely a great place to spend some time with these two.

Thanks again, Mark and Linda, for having me out to do your photos – it was wonderful to meet you both!

Focus on a Friend: Fuzzypants Pet Photography

Aaaahhh!! I have been waiting to be able to do this post because I am excited to show off my friend Carina and the amazing work that she does. Carina, of Fuzzypants Pet Photography, is featured in the summer edition of The Virginia Maryland Dog magazine. This issue of The Virginia Maryland Dog features Carina’s sixth cover for the magazine – and all the covers show off dogs in the VA/MD area that are available for adoption! Carina is affiliated with Hearts Speak, a coalition of artists that provides pro bono services to help draw attention to the countless animals that are looking for forever homes.

Carina and I had been talking about doing a photo swap anyway, so I was so honored when she asked if we could do the swap and she could use the images I took of her and her work with my Skylos for the magazine article. OF COURSE. I’m so pleased to have connected with such a talented photographer who also happens to support a cause that’s so very important to me as well.

You can check out the feature on Carina and Fuzzypants Pet Photography here: http://issuu.com/thevirginiadog/docs/vamddog_sum13web (Page 34) and I’ve included below a few other photos from my session with her for you to enjoy as well. Thank you, Carina, for having me take these photos for you, and for the awesome work that you do for animals in need!
